30” x 40” This art work has a rocking chair facing away from us, with wings attached. It expresses the feeling I have when I’m trying to do too much, trying too hard to be everything for everybody, and that feeling of trying to be an angel, trying to be a good person, trying to be everything. The specific reason for the rocking chair is to symbolize that when I try to do those things, when I’m trying too hard, when I’m trying to be too many things to too many people and what I think other people want from me, I’m not really stable, I’m rocking back and forth to please people and I’m not being true to my own needs. It’s not necessarily always a bad thing, but it’s a waffling feeling, because you’re not completely sure footed, you’re working for other people instead of yourself. The colors of the chair fade in and out of the background as I see myself become more a part of what I’m trying to do for others and not standing up for myself. So it’s both a comical and reality check reminder of that situation we all face from time to time. Looking at it reminds me not to try so hard that I lose myself and instead try to be the best of me to help people, so that I really am helping and not just jumping around.
