This piece
consists of 4 different small sized canvases. Each one a different
chair, different colors, different treatments, representing some of
my different personalities, not all of my personalities, but some of
the more prominent and regularly occurring ones. I’ve shared with
people how I sometimes feel I’m existing with multiple personalities
that are so defined, because in your life depending on what you do,
you have to be different people at different times. This collection,
sitting away from the wall on a shelf, represents the balancing act
of these four different personalities. The green chair represents
the Casual part of me, when I am at my most relaxed, which is why
it’s a big comfy chair and done in a style that isn’t so strict in
the details. The little purple painting, also in the front, has
three theatre seats, representing the Business side of me, that
section that I use of myself when I need to generate audiences for
my work, trying to do things to please clients, or anything that
involves other people. It’s not just myself, it’s not one singular
seat, it’s also others included and we’re all joined together as an
experience of business. There are different situations in my life,
especially with my art career, where I need to be business oriented
and I need to have those skills to run a business, since as an
artist we are businesses ourselves, we represent ourselves, we have
to know all the ins and outs of running ourselves as a business. The
larger blue painting, the biggest of the four canvases, I call
Formal, represents that part of my life where I need to present
myself more formally, well dressed, well presented, articulate. The
subject is a detailed, very formal looking chair and appears as
something that puts up a presentation that looks good. The seat I
chose to put in the same color as the background, so it doesn’t
really have a seat, symbolizing that the pretty presentation alone
is not enough, you need more information from the background to the
truer presentation of who you are. The last canvas, which is the
slightly smaller yellow, includes a chair that represents the artist
side of me. The application of the paint, the colors I’ve used, and
how they blend together represents how I’m more creative, that part
of me that enjoys the creative experience, doing the creation of
artwork and being more free flowing in what I do. These four pieces
together represent some of my more visible personalities used on a
daily basis, to live, to work, to breathe and to work with other
people. The way I choose to layer the canvases directly relates to
how these personalities work for me at this point in my life.
